Supported Employment
The Berkshire Autistic Society Support into Employment Project came to an end in December 2003. This was a 2-year Learning and Skills Council /European Social Fund-funded project with the aim of demonstrating that specialist help, advice and support can be effective in enabling adults with Asperger Syndrome to find a job which matches their skills and in which they are happy – and that this specialised intervention is more effective than the conventional (i.e. non Asperger specialised) support which someone with AS would receive through conventional channels.
Three Guidance Documents have been produced which provide advice on employment issues. one for parents/carers, one for people with AS and one for employers.

| There are also two reports -First Year and Second Year, which give full details of the work of the Project and which, amongst other things, list employers in Berkshire that BAS worked with during the project, and a list of existing Supported Employment Agencies. |

We hope the good work that Robert Warman and the Employment Project team started will continue, and to this end, BAS have made a bid for funds to employ someone at East Berks College, who will link in with the Employability Options Course that is up and running there. The Employability Course was developed with Jenny Ilic (Asperger Co-ordinator at the College) as part of the Employment Project. |
