Disability Living Allowance advice and guidance

DLA is a benefit for those who need help caring for themselves or getting around.

Berkshire Autistic Society offers individual assistance to parents, carers and professionals who are completing a claim form for Disability Living Allowance for a child with an autistic spectrum disorder.

BAS, in collaboration with Simone Poole of West Berkshire Council’s Welfare benefits team, has written a booklet which will help you work through the DLA form for children independently. This guide is specifically for children with an ASD.

We run regular DLA (child) workshops which are free for family members, professional members are charged a nominal fee. Please contact the office for further details on 01189 594 594 or email contact@autismberkshire.org.uk. Workshop dates are advertised through our bi-monthly newsletter, members weekly email and website events calendar.   Non members who are interested in attending should contact the BAS office.

It is helpful to collect evidence together before you start to complete the form. This can be reports from professionals and your own records of the help you give your child, often called a "DLA diary" The National Autistic Society's website suggests what to do: keeping a diary.

For Adults we offer one to one support for individuals and/or their carers to assist them to complete a claim for DLA.
