Workshops offer tailored advice to parents of autistic teenagers

Parents and carers of autistic teenagers can request free places at a series of three online autism advice workshops from the Berkshire West Autism & ADHD Support Service, which start next week.

These evidence-based autism advice workshops, developed by Autism Berkshire’s family support team, provide tailored information and support for the parents and carers of autistic children and young people aged 11 to 18.

They are open to parents/carers whose families are registered with a GP surgery in the Berkshire West NHS area – the Reading, Wokingham and West Berkshire council areas – whether their child has a diagnosis, is waiting for a Berkshire CAMHS assessment or when autism is suspected and they are in mainstream education or home-educated and do not have learning disabilities.

The workshops each focus on a different topic and include helpful tips and strategies that parents and carers can use to support their teenage children. They will all take place online using Zoom on Thursday mornings, between 10am and 11.30am.

We recommend that parents and carers attend all the sessions, as the topics covered complement each other.

The workshops available are as follows:

  • Autism & Teenagers: Thursday, September 17. This workshop looks at the challenges of being autistic in adolescence.
  • Anxiety & Teenagers: October 8. This workshop considers why anxiety is so prevalent in autistic teenagers and the importance of self-esteem and resilience, and looks at strategies to support emotional regulation.
  • Teenagers & Social Situations: Thursday, November 26. This workshop focuses on the social situations autistic teenagers face at school, at home and online.
