Chop & Chat course has recipe to support autistic adults

Autistic adults in Berkshire can register for free places on a Chop & Chat course this autumn, running over eight sessions from October until December.

The course, provided by the Berkshire Adult Autism Support Service, will take place at Beech Lodge School, at Stubbings, just west of Maidenhead.

Sessions are focused around preparing, cooking and sharing a meal, and talking about various issues that can affect autistic adults, including conversation skills – starting, maintaining and joining a conversation – making friends and socialising.

The aim is to help to develop life skills, boost self-esteem and confidence, and improve participants’ education, training and employment prospects.

The course sessions, running from 6pm to 8pm on Monday evenings, will take place on the following dates: October 7 & 14, November 4, 11, 18 & 25, and December 2 & 9.

The course will be led by Helen and Scott Harris, who co-ordinate our Bear With Me social group for autistic adults in Maidenhead.

Please note that to take part in Chop & Chat you must be aged 18+, registered as a patient with a GP surgery in Berkshire and have an autism diagnosis or be on the NHS waiting list for an autism assessment.

Transport from Maidenhead town centre and the railway station to the course venue will be available on request.

If you have any questions about the course, please email adult.support@autismberkshire.org.uk or call 01189 594 594 (option 1) and leave a voicemail message. One of our adult support mentors will get in touch.

Priority for places will be given to people who have not previously attended a Chop & Chat course, or the Independent Living or SocialEyes courses previously run by Autism Berkshire.
